This panel brings together two sets of papers: The first set focuses on the impact of attitudes towards democracy and either studies their impact on vote choice and political participation or assesses explanations for differing attitudes towards democracy in the population. The second set of papers is based on cleavage theory and either uses the traditional two-dimensional model to study the effect of country-specific factors on the ideological structure of the national electorate or expands this model by a universalism-particularism dimension to study its effects on vote choice. Most papers take a comparative approach by studying several countries.
