This panel looks at the rise in university collaboration through multilateral and bilaterial alliances from a comparative perspective. In addition to the European Universities initiative there has been growing interest in alliances globally. Five years on from the launch of the initiative, the alliances funded by the European Universities Initiative are now more established, providing an opportunity to analyse their achievements. Moreover, the scale of the European Universities Initiative, comprising of over 60 different alliances, provides scope for comparative analyses of different alliances. The panel welcomes theoretical and empirical studies that focus on one alliance as a case study or engage in a comparative analysis across different alliances.
