Abstract

In an era of growing geopolitical tensions, democratic backsliding, and contestation of international norms, the legitimacy of global governance faces unprecedented challenges. This panel explores how legitimacy is constructed, contested, and maintained in a deeply polarized world. We examine the roles of international institutions, state and non-state actors, and transnational movements in shaping legitimacy narratives. How do competing visions of order affect the authority of global institutions? What are the implications for international cooperation and stability? Bringing together diverse theoretical perspectives, this panel seeks to advance our understanding of legitimacy in a fragmented global landscape.
