Abstract

Contemporary representative democracies are undergoing profound transformations, reshaping the nature and function of political representation. This panel examines how new forms of democratic governance, digital and technological forces, ethnic and environmental factors, and evolving political cleavages influence representative institutions and practices. It explores the complex interplay between deliberative and representative democracy, the impact of digital illiberalism on liberal-democratic principles, and the ways in which representation is constructed in divided societies. Addressing both historical and contemporary developments, the panel interrogates the mechanisms driving these changes and potential pathways for democratic renewal.
