Abstract

Papers in this panel explore the relationship between populism, parties, and political representation and consider both supply- and demand side aspects that mediate the relationship between citizens and populist actors and movements. Papers consider, among others, the impact of populist parties on the fabric and functioning of representative democracies, which parties (and how) use elements of populist style (in which political systems), and how populist attitudes influence citizens’ conceptions of the good representative and representational preferences. Other papers research the activities-on-the-ground of populist radical-right parties (PRRPs) and discuss the ways in which their cultivating of robust local networks relates to (and potentially balances) their populist, unmediated representation styles.
