Abstract

Speakers Peter Seeberg, University of Southern Denmark Regine Schwab, Goethe-University Frankfurt, Peace Research Institute Frankfurt More than a decade into a devastating civil war, Syria stands at a pivotal juncture. The ousting of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 has ushered in a new era marked by fragmented governance, a massive refugee crisis, and uncertain pathways for reconstruction and reconciliation. The interim government, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa and backed by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has initiated significant political changes, including the dissolution of the Ba'athist parliament and pledges toward inclusive governance. Simultaneously, over 125,000 refugees have returned to Syria, often facing dire conditions with limited access to shelter, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The international community remains divided on the legitimacy of the new government and the appropriate response to the unfolding humanitarian situation. This webinar aims to examine: - The current state of governance in Syria and the challenges of establishing inclusive political structures. - The conditions and prospects for refugee return amid ongoing instability and infrastructural devastation. - The geopolitical and domestic factors shaping Syria's future, including regional power dynamics and international recognition. Join us as we delve into these critical issues, seeking to unpack the complexities of Syria's transitional moment and explore pathways toward a stable and inclusive future.
