Abstract

This roundtable will present and discuss Elect Women for a Change: The Path to Gender Parity in Politics, authored by Mona Lena Krook and published by Polity in February 2026. The book brings together various strands of work Krook been engaged in for more than 25 years, as both an academic and as a consultant to international organizations, governments, and civil society groups around the world. It integrates her work on gender quotas and violence against women in politics, providing a framework for scholars and policymakers to better understand and advance women's equal representation. Providing a road map for achieving gender parity in politics, the book begins with an overview of the global parity movement, including the latest international frameworks in support of this goal. It develops the concept of parity in terms of the three dimensions of access, power, and diversity. It provides a balanced assessment of the benefits of parity, showing how it can advance equality and human rights, promote qualified and diligent politicians, foster more responsive public policy, increase democratic legitimacy, and encourage gender equality in other spheres. It identifies three barriers to gender parity in terms of socialization, discrimination, and backlash. It then outlines strategies used globally to counteract these three barriers to advance gender parity. The book ends with a global call to action to make parity a reality.
