Narratives on statehood are a constitutive part of our thinking about politics and the political. States are conceived as central actors in the political realm and are often described and visualized in anthropomorphic terms. Especially analyses of the international sphere refer to state-centred narratives which reflect particular understandings of sovereignty. There are accounts of the “Westphalian system”, of “strong” and “weak” states, of “failed” states or visions on a “world state”, etc. The panel will take stock of and discuss diverse narratives of statehood in the global realm. In addition to inquiring into various historical sociological narratives of modern territorial statehood, it will seek to inspect narratives of "failed", European, global statehood etc. The panel invites both studies on particular narratives as well as meta-analyses on different narratives of statehood in the global realm.
