This panel centers the notion of resistance in its manifold configurations to explore the ways in which different actors mobilize for and against gender equality and women’s and LGBTQI+ rights in the age of anti-gender politics. The papers offer complementary insights onto this question with a combination of studies that focus on particular geographies at different scales (Serbia, Catalonia, Paris) as well as transcend national boundaries (diaspora activism). Drawing upon different methodologies (interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic field-walks), the featured research sheds light onto the ways in which individuals and groups resist anti-gender discourses, political repression and displacement but also mandates for gender mainstreaming in the field of education. A central question raised by the papers is whether resistance is active or passive, reactive, strategic, or productive, mainly responding to particular political developments or imagining alternative futures through aesthetic expression and the construction of networks of care and solidarity.
