Abstract

A shared European identity is often seen as a necessary precursor to a full political European Union. However, so far the literature on politics and European identity has mainly concerned itself with questions of how such identification shapes attitudes towards the European political order. This panel takes a different tack, focusing instead on how the actions and institutions of the EU can help shape European identification. Focusing on discursive representation, politicization and feedback loops from EU level crisis policy the panel seeks to answer the question “How important are the actions of EU actors for creating a citizen-level European identity that the EU can later rely on for its social legitimacy?”
