Abstract

How do (different groups of) men become socialized into gendered political beings? Why do young men and women diverge considerably in their attitudes toward gender equality? How do specific circumstances, such as fatherhood and educational background, affect men’s political socialization? This panel brings together papers that, in different ways, explore the socialization processes through which men’s political participation and attitudes are formed and reproduced, as well as how men’s participation in political contexts shapes these processes. This includes analyses of how masculinities are learned, negotiated, and embodied by young men involved in youth wings of political parties. The papers also examine differences in how young men and women across European contexts relate to feminism, abortion, sexual harassment, and other gender equality policies, and whether such differences among younger generations may be linked to how these issues are narrated in the media. Further, the panel explores how masculinities and gender equality policies shape norms around fatherhood in different European contexts, as well as how specific educational and class-based resources can facilitate the construction of hegemonic masculinities that uphold the political power of certain groups of men in Pakistan.
