Intersectionality calls on scholars and practitioners of public institutions, to consider how systems of oppression of gender, race, class and other identities impact individuals and build institutional norms that embed oppression. Feminist governance, with its principal concern of fomenting gender equality, should therefore be necessarily oriented toward the implementation of equality in a nuanced manner that moves beyond gender, but responds to the multivariate intersecting identities and oppressions. This panel considers how intersectionality can be both used to deepen analysis and methodologies, but also how intersectionality is being utilised to respond to policy challenges. Papers recognise the overt challenges, such as anti-identity politics, and institutional struggles in meaningfully engaging with the notion of intersectionality in governance.
