Abstract

The momentum for EU enlargement has accelerated following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, intertwining the process with pressing security challenges across Europe. These concerns affect both Eastern European candidate countries and Western Balkan partners, where geopolitical pressures are mounting. Yet, the current enlargement methodology remains poorly equipped to address these security dimensions. This panel brings together papers offering diverse perspectives on the growing role of security in the enlargement process and examining how societies perceive its geopolitical implications.
