Abstract

This panel examines how the shifting international order is reshaping European security and defence in an era marked by war in Ukraine, evolving transatlantic relations, and growing global interconnectedness. The contributions explore the EU’s efforts to act as a more autonomous and credible security actor amid uncertainty about US commitment, renewed debates over NATO–EU relations, and the widening scope of security challenges beyond Europe’s immediate neighbourhood. Overall, the panel offers a multidimensional perspective on Europe’s evolving role in international security, shedding light on the tensions between ambition and capability, autonomy and dependence, and regional focus and global engagement in a rapidly changing strategic environment.
