Abstract

This panel examines the demand-side foundations of democratic backsliding in Europe, focusing on citizen attitudes, preferences, and belief systems that enable or constrain democratic erosion. While much of the literature on democratic decline has concentrated on institutional changes and elite strategies, this panel shifts attention to the societal conditions under which democratic transgressions become politically viable. By integrating insights from comparative politics, political behaviour, and European studies, the panel analyses how public opinion interacts with elite supply to shape trajectories of democratic governance.
