Abstract

This panel focuses on the EU’s growing engagement with geo-economic instruments in response to renewed great-power rivalry. The papers examine the rise of economic security as a central policy concern, analysing tools such as trade, industrial policy, investment screening, and state intervention. Together, the contributions assess how the EU is recalibrating its external economic relations in a world marked by strategic competition, state capitalism, and geopolitical risk. The panel sheds light on the tensions between openness and protection, market integration and strategic autonomy, and the broader implications of the EU’s geo-economic turn for global governance.
