Regulatory agencies occupy a central position in contemporary governance, yet they vary considerably in their institutional design, practices, and responses to changing political and societal demands. This panel advances the comparative study of regulatory agencies by examining how agencies adapt to evolving governance challenges across different policy domains and levels of government. The contributions explore questions of crisis governance, strategic reputation management, regulatory intermediation, strategic reorientation of competition authorities and organizational independence. Together, the papers offer new perspectives on how regulatory agencies operate and evolve within an increasingly complex and contested governance landscape.
