This panel examines the rise of anti-gender and anti-feminist politics as a key feature of authoritarian, populist and far-right projects across diverse political contexts and across Global North and Global South. The papers analyses how anti-gender discourses, policies, and mobilisations are deployed to consolidate power, legitimise repression, and restructure gendered, racialised, and reproductive hierarchies, often under the guise of protection, security or emancipation. Empirically, the panel spans a wide range of national and regional contexts, drawing attention to the different trajectories of anti-gendering and anti-feminism in Global North and Global South as well as patterns of transnational dissemination and local manifestations. The papers discuss following themes and contexts: comparative analysis of anti-gender politics in Turkey and Mexico; the role of femonationalist arguments in the governance of Uyghur Muslim women in China; how the far-right electoral support in France is motivated by certain perceptions of migrants’ productive and reproductive labour; and transnational anti-abortion mobilisations in Romania. Theoretically, the papers engage with feminist political economy and social reproduction theory, the concept of femonationalism, theories of nationalism and postcolonial perspectives, among others. Several contributions push beyond Eurocentric or Global North–centred frameworks.
