This panel explores how democracy can be understood, evaluated, and sustained through theoretical, methodological, and practical perspectives. The papers examine methodological challenges in evaluating democratic institutions, the importance of context when studying democracy, academic freedom and democratic free speech, and the role of creative self-correction in maintaining democratic order. The panel also considers what political theorists can learn from politicians’ use of rhetoric and reasoning. Together, the papers reflect on how democratic institutions and practices can be assessed, interpreted, and strengthened.
