This panel brings together multidisciplinary approaches on democracy and its quality and explores how democratic characteristics are realised, both theoretically and empirically. To shed light on the wide-range of issues at hand, the panel incorporates opposing attitudes on how democratic regimes and characteristics can be strengthened. Individual papers consider the effect of ownership and social justice; citizens' trust in political institutions; the performance of democratic and non-democratic regimes vis-á-vis public commitments; and the incorporation of international standards in state practices.
