Abstract

This panel is set out to bring together contemporary theoretical and empirical approaches to various aspects of democratic systems. Reflecting on current practices, the individual papers discuss a variety of democracy types, e.g. deliberative, direct and representative, and draw conclusions on best practices and future challenges. From a theoretical point of view, the panel discusses how pluralist actors lead to decentralisation of democratic systems and explores a divide between participatory and problem solving approaches to democracy. From an empirical point of view, the panel considers the effect of political participation on direct democracies; civil society networks on decision-making processes; and international transformations on representative democracies.
