Research has been mostly focused on the institutional-formal side of political transformation in Central and Eastern Europe. Our panel aims to investigate the other side of the coin: the informal, less (or non-) institutionalised practices of new democracies. The everyday operation of democracies lies not only in institutions, but in practices as well. The panel would focus on informal practices which might enhance or hinder the consolidation of democracy in this region of the world. Studies on custom law, common sense, corruption, civil disobedience, civic courage, informal power, accountability and other related factors of political culture of transformation are to be investigated.
