This panel deals with the nature and shaping factors of organised interests’ relationship with parties in liberal democracies. Political parties, outside government agencies, have not been at the core of empirical analyses of interest-group politics to date. Therefore, the aim is first to explore the extent to which/how interest groups are linked with political parties, but also how intensively they actually interact with, and try to influence, political parties in different policy fields, within and outside the national assembly. Second, the panel aims to explore the conditions under which interest groups choose to establish close relationships with parties, or opt for greater distance or separation. Primarily, we aim to attract theory-driven papers based on new empirical research in this field, within or across countries. Both papers looking at particular kinds of interest groups (and specific political parties) and the interest group-party relationships in general, are welcome.
