Building on research conducted under the aegis of the Marie Curie initial training network ‘ChangingEmployment’ this panel aims to share some of the initial findings of the work undertaken to date by five early stage researchers at four different institutions across Europe. The issue of inclusion (and exclusion) of migrants is a major issue confronting both labour markets and societies more broadly in Europe. The expansion of the European Union and the associated free movement of labour, coupled with entrenched and prolonged economic crises, have seen the issue of migration once again rise up the political agenda. The aim of this panel is to critically engage with the issues this raises through exploring the subjective experiences of migrants, conceptualized also as emigrants and ‘returners’, as well as an analysis of the political and economic developments that are facilitating these normative shifts, including austerity and privatization agendas. The nature of this academic network means that the papers are by colleagues who have been working together on the topic of inclusion and exclusion for around 18 months, allowing for a flow to the papers in the panel. The panel will be chaired by the academic co-ordinator of the network.
