Abstract

This panel focuses on party competition in Central and Eastern Europe. It takes as a starting point the view that, though particular, parties and party systems in the region can be fruitfully studied through traditional theoretical and methodological lenses developed in established democracies. The panel thus assesses party positioning and strategies in ideological space; their responses to public opinion perceptions, voter behavior and exogenous shock; and their subsequent electoral success. Through these analyses, the panel aims to address the competitive performance of Central and Eastern European party systems, which is at the core of their democratic functioning, while providing a comparison between these recent and more established democracies.
