Abstract

Research on the role of leaders for democratic elections has seen important developments in recent times, namely by establishing their importance as a short-term cue which is used by voters in their electoral calculations, and defining some political contexts where leaders may make a significant difference to the election outcome (presidential regimes, more disproportional elections) . This panel seeks to further the research on the importance of leaders by inviting papers who reflect and build on the existing state of the art for democratic elections. In particular we are interested in papers which explore the following topics: research which tries to unpack the meaning of leader effects for voters, both in terms of their relationship to party identification and leader traits; research which investigates the importance of institutions such as political parties, the campaigns, or media systems, to shape the impact of leaders; and research which explores the types of individuals who are more likely to use leaders as cues for electoral choices. Other themes which focus on leader effects will also be considered. We particularly welcome comparative research although single-country studies which employ a comparative election design research are also encouraged to apply.
