Abstract

Many classics in political science were concerned with the link between party organization and representation. Arguably, the iron law of oligarchy stifled intra-party choice and related developments towards catchall-ism and cartelization repressed citizens’ choice between parties. But party organizations still differ in important respects and therefore parties choose different strategies, follow different representational models and perform better or worse. Also, (new) parties experiment with innovative forms of organization, which – in case it is successful – challenges mainstream ideas on organization and representation. This panel invites papers that use party organization to explain or explore some aspect of representation (government participation, party communication, party performance, party positioning). We invite empirical and theoretical papers with a comparative outlook.
