European integration is a complex phenomenon and a concept that is difficult to capture. It exists and is researched in very different ways. While the literature is divided in multiple agendas such as Europeanization, intergovernmentalism or federalism; the reality of European integration is even more complex, as integration processes exist in different forms both inside and outside the European Union (EU). One can approach European integration as cooperation between nation-states, as the development of common EU institutions, as convergence between various European countries or even as the emergence of a shared European identity. These are all important aspects of the broader integration process and this panel intends to bring together papers dealing with these different forms of European integration. Papers will focus on the various ways in which European states cooperate as well as the important impact the EU has on its Member States. The panel also welcomes papers that export and compare the EU experience to processes outside Europe. By bringing together such a variety of papers, the panel hopes to shed light on the divergence of approaches to European integration.
