Abstract

Today, electronic, social and written media can be considered among our most powerful agents of entertainment, information, and socialization. Media sites are of considerable ideological negotiation and contestation, that is, powerful sites of struggle over meaning and values. This panel is focused on the interplay between media, democracy and politics exploring the significance of gender, ethnicity/race, sexuality etc. in relation to a number of research areas and discussions of news sources in the media, representation of ‘minorities’ and majorities /whiteness in the media, the ‘gendered newsroom’, leadership of news organizations etc. The panel advances a research agenda with a focus on gender and other different-making categories contributing to debates on intersectionality as theory and method in relation to media, democracy and politics. A research agenda focused on broadening the debate by means of understanding interactions of multiple systems of privilege and oppression.
