The past decade has seen a large increase in work on populism and the radical right in Europe, in parallel with the rise and consolidation of such parties across the continent. This panel will feature presentations by authors of three of the most recent studies: Daniele Albertazzi and Duncan McDonnell ‘Populists in Power’ (Routledge, 2015); Andrea Pirro ‘The Populist Radical Right in Central and Eastern Europe’ (Routledge, 2015); Stijn van Kessel ‘Populist Parties in Europe: Agents of Discontent?’ (Palgrave, 2015). After discussing the key findings of their work and how it responds to the existing literature, the panelists will consider and debate what future research on populism and the radical right in Europe should examine and how it should do so.
