Abstract

Liberal democracies accommodate the convictions of religious believers in a number of ways, for example by exempting them from generally applicable rules. This panel will explore some of the normative and conceptual issues to which accommodating religious beliefs and believers gives rise. Normatively, it will explore the justifications that have been offered for religious accommodations as well as its compatibility with other values, such as equality and democracy. Conceptually, it will explore the relationships between different forms of religious accommodations, including those extended to groups and institutions as well as individuals.
