This panel deals with issues related to regional development, environmental governance, and climate change. The Arctic is facing new challenges due to a changing climate. At the same time as the global warming implies new risks for the region, it also implies new possibilities such as new potentials for extraction of oil, gas and minerals as well as new shipping lanes in the Northern Sea Route (NSR), shortening the route between the Atlantic and the Pacific. The interest in the Arctic has increased among academics, states outside the region, and multinational companies. The interplay between different actors creates a complex and challenging political environment due to their often conflicting interests and goals within the Arctic region. Climate change includes both risk management due to the global warming and the rise of the sea level and the search for natural recourses hidden under the ice sheet. This panel focuses on the challenges and opportunities related to climate change and global warming. The focus is on risk management and risk analysis related to climate change and a sustainable regional development.
