The 2014 European Parliament elections saw Eurosceptic parties gain close to 30% of the seats, with the ensuing media analysis involving claims about a ‘Eurosceptic earthquake’ or ‘wave of Euroscepticism’ sweeping across Europe. A number of countries indeed saw significant victories for Eurosceptic parties; UKIP and the French National Front, for example, ‘won’ the vote in their respective countries. The forms and expression of Euroscepticism, however, differ significantly across the EU. This panel investigates the development and success of Euroscepticism in the media during the 2014 European Parliament election campaign, with papers drawing on empirical analysis of traditional press and television from a variety of EU countries. The content of Eurosceptic discourse during the election campaigns and the role of the media in fostering Euroscepticism or creating a narrative of Euroscepticism will be interrogated and theoretical approaches to Euroscepticism will be developed in order to paint a fuller picture of the diversity of Euroscepticism in the EU.
