Abstract

While EU studies treated the European Union (EU) “sui generis” for a long time, recent scholarship has put the EU in comparative perspective thereby challenging mainstream theories of integration. The emerging field of comparative regionalism allows a fresh look at the European experience by treating the EU as one among many other examples of regional cooperation and integration. The papers presented at the panel offer new insights on integration theories by systematically engaging other regional experiences. The papers are part of the new Oxford Handbook of Comparative Re-gionalism (Oxford University Press, 2016; editors: Tanja A. Börzel and Thomas Risse) – the first of its kind.
