Abstract

In the past few years a new wave of mobilization has emerged worldwide. The so-called Arab Spring, the Indignados in Spain, Occupy movements in the U.S. and elsewhere, just to mention the most well-known, have mobilized hundreds of thousands of people in various parts of the globe. Similarly to previous movements, one can wonder what these movements have achieved, what are the outcomes of this new wave of mobilization. The existing literature focuses on the consequences of previous waves of mobilization, such as labor movements, new social movements, and the civil right movement. Furthermore, it deals primarily if not exclusively with movement outcomes in democratic contexts. These studies have advanced knowledge on this topic, stressing in particular the crucial role of movement strategies, framing, and political opportunities in helping social movements and other forms of contentious politics to have an impact. This panel deals with the consequences of the new wave of mobilization in the attempt to discover similarities and differences in the conditions, mechanisms, and processes through which it leads to social and political change. We welcome theoretical discussions of the effects of these movements (e.g., the outcomes of mobilization in non-democratic settings) as well as analyses based on empirical evidence. We particularly encourage comparative studies. Papers may also deal with methodological issues relating to studying the consequences of social movements and protest actions. Papers may look at all kinds of outcomes, such as individual-level and biographical consequences of having participated in those movements, their political effects, and broader social and cultural consequences. The consequences that may be addressed range from short-term and short-lived effects to more structural and long-lasting ones.
