Abstract

This panel examines the nature of the party system and its institutional embedding. It not only analyzes the stability of the party system in general but also focuses on the emergence and rise of niche and populist parties. What affects party system stability? And what favours the emergence of new parties? Maintenance of and changes to the political landscape are linked to institutional factors, as well as to the behaviour of individual voters. Additionally, in recent years party systems were confronted with the foundation of new niche and populist parties. Especially since the beginning of the European debt crisis they have come to the fore. On the one hand, their numbers have risen massively. On the other hand, these parties were also able to increase their number of votes, and sometimes they were even able to enter public office. What goals are these parties pursuing and what affects the stabilisation of niche and populist parties? How do they influence the existing party system in their country?
