Traditionally, the welfare state has been a source of social security and has provided redistribution between social groups and across individual’s life cycle. However, recently the capacity of the welfare state has come under substantial strain due to pressures resulting from globalization and changing socio-demographic make-up of the welfare states’ societies. This panel discusses both sides of this process by examining the nature of current challenges to the welfare state as well as ways in which the welfare systems have responded to these developments.
