Abstract

What happens when electoral rules change? The objective of our panel is to examine the consequences of electoral system change on a series of politically relevant factors such as the size and composition of party systems, political representation and the overall level of democratic quality. The motivation for the panel's focus on electoral rule changes stems from the methodological complexities of electoral research, namely the endogeneity problem, the potential omitted variable bias in cross-sectional research designs as well as the challenge to specify models that account for time trends. The papers in this panel address these challenges using data from the national level, the electoral districts as well as the individual level.
