Abstract

The European debt crisis and the conflict between EU member states over refugees and immigration have renewed the interest in concepts such as identification and ideology. Identification with groups such as Europe, the nation or a political party and ideological orientations have proven to shape people’s political attitudes in a considerable way. This is even more the case in contexts where conflicts about identification and ideology are salient and serve as important heuristics to make sense of the political world. However, questions about the effect of different contexts on the salience of identification and ideology have rarely been addressed in comparative research. Moreover it is often unclear what identification and ideology actually mean for different people. This panel aims at addressing these questions and shed some light on the influence of different contexts and different meanings of concepts such as identification and ideology on public opinion and political preferences. The panel welcomes contributions that focus both on case studies as well as on comparative research.
