Abstract

Political elites across the European Union face a more critical electorate within their respective national environments. In an age of austerity, public opinion is increasingly vocal about the developments and policies at the EU-level, concerned about identifying the winners and losers in a game where the rules may be unknown or at best reflect a winner-takes-all game of chance. This panel explores how this austerity-driven and economically insecure populace responds to electoral and European budgetary proposals, and the potential of European institutions to manage the expectations of Europe's citizens.
