This panel puts collective identity into the context of denationalization and migration. It is particularly interested in the background impact of globalization and Europeanization as drivers for identity change. Identity change is explored with regard to migration of ethnic minorities, center-periphery relations, multiple identities and nationalism (or patriotism). The panel focuses on a variety of country cases ranging from Georgia, France to Serbia and Hong Kong. It explores tensions resulting from denationalization pressures and how they are used to form new patterns of belonging and to reframe the old ones. Against this backdrop, diasporic groups, ethnic minorities and national elites are analyzed in the context of belonging and othering.
