Abstract

One of the ways in which the relation between parties and voters changes, is the personalization of politics. It means that individual characteristics of candidates become more important, while the party label or party ideology appears to be to a lesser extent an asset for winning the electoral race. This process can be analyzed at different stages of the electoral process. A first stage is the selection of candidates by the political parties. Some papers in this panel zoom in on that internal selection process. Other papers analyze the election itself, and analyze whether it is the candidates or the parties that matter for winning elections.
