Abstract

This panel engages in the analysis of political parties as organizations. While parties are all geared towards – more or less – the same goals, they do organize in different ways. The party literature has analyzed variations in party institutionalization, cohesion, professionalization, centralization, and many other organizational features. It is often a set of organizational characteristics that defines broader party types, like the catch-all or the cartel party. In this panel several dimensions of decision making in party organization will be discussed, including the processes of leadership selection and the functioning of party congresses.
