Abstract

Mostly mobilized by political parties and social movements, political extremism and populism are on the rise in Europe. As a consequence, researchers have largely studied populist and extremist organizations, their trajectories and their leaders in the last three decades. These research are fundamental to deeply understand these ideologies and their development. However, some aspects have remained at the fringes of research on populism and political extremism and need to be investigated in order to broaden the understanding of such a phenomenon. While often described as dangerous for the state of democracies, populism and political extremism are indeed also catalyzed by and/or through religion and the media. In addition, the gender issue is also important to take into account when studying populism and political extremism since gender can be key to explain the voters’ behaviors. More generally, religion, media and gender are three aspects that can greatly help to better understand the populist and extremist spread over Europe. The panel welcomes empirical and analytical contributions dealing with of these three aspects, deploying a quantitative, a qualitative or a mixed methods design.
