This panel brings together a set of papers that analyse recent developments in the global political economy. Four papers look at different aspects of trade policy. Among the questions tackled by these papers are: which preferential trade agreements include provisions that aim at protecting labour rights? Do these provisions actually matter in improving the protection of labour rights? Can the international harmonization of private law act as a substitute for trade agreements? And how do countries cope with restrictions in international trade resulting from economic sanctions? A final paper asks how inequality between ethno-communal groups can best be measured, and shows trends in such group-based inequality across time and across regions.
