Exploring the Dynamics of Democratization and De-Democratization for Gender+ Equality I

Abstract

Across Europe, countries currently experience political dynamics that challenge and threaten democracy. Governments in Hungary and Poland, for instance, are marginalizing opposition, concentrating political power and curbing space for independent media and social movements. This coincides with a rise of populist and anti-immigrant parties with anti-democratic tendencies. In some other parts of the world, for instance Latin America, we see contrasting dynamics with governments introducing new mechanisms for social inclusion and participatory democracy that encounter problems being sustained. What are the implications of these worrisome political dynamics for gender+ equality policies and institutions? This double panel presents papers that deepen our understanding of how dynamics of de-democratization and democratization affect gender+ equality across a range of outcomes and different policy areas. Papers are both theoretical and empirical, and focus on a wide range of different contexts.
