100 Years of Women’s Suffrage: Implications for Women’s Political Representation Today?

Abstract

Women’s suffrage is celebrating its 100th anniversary in several European countries these years. It gave women the right to vote and to stand in elections. What are its long term implications for women in politics? Certainly, women’s descriptive representation has increased in most parliaments and also the substantive representation of women and gender issues has grown in importance. However, large discrepancies still exist between countries and research is inconclusive about what causes these differences and what impact women in politics have today. This panel explores the dynamics of women’s political representation from a historical and international comparative perspective. A special focus is on the relationship between the timing and circumstances under which women’s suffrage was introduced and the descriptive and substantive representation of women and gender issues today.
