Abstract

Opportunities for women to participate in politics - as voters, activists, and politicians - have been viewed as a positive development for women and for democracy. Recent gains, however, are challenged by a growing number of reports of physical attacks, intimidation, and harassment directed at politically active women, often with the aim of deterring their participation or rendering them less effective as political actors. This panel will address various aspects of this emerging research area, exploring concepts, theories, and data related to the study of violence against women in politics and elections.
