Dynamics of Public Opinion: Partisanship, Ideology, and Political Involvement

Abstract

This panel brings together scholars studying the dynamics of public opinion in panel or experimental research. The papers investigate change in public opinion outcomes (political and participatory attitudes) over varying time periods after treatment. Time periods range from quick reactions (in the paper on negativity bias) to a year (in the paper on the impact of party cues) to close to a decade (in the papers on technology change and discontent, and on political identity and political interest). In addition to a substantive focus on understanding the how political evaluations and participatory attitudes develop over time, the four papers also address the advantages and challenges in using longitudinal data.
