Abstract

The panel takes the format of a roundtable where six co-authors engaged in normative political theory debates about concepts of citizenship, governance, human rights, and justice come together to articulate GNT’s 1) commitments, 2) varied intellectual roots, 3) core methodological approaches, 4) interpretive, inductive, and recursively deductive analytical strands, 5) ethical considerations, and 6) implications for the discipline of political science. The panel centres on a programmatic framework approach, titled "Grounded Normative Theory (GNT): Theorising with those who struggle". The approach has been developed by six co-authors including Brooke Ackerly (Vanderbilt University), Genevieve Johnson (Simon Fraser University), Chris Ternove (University of British Columbia), Fonna Forman (University of California San Diego), Lou Cabrera (Griffith University) and Antje Wiener (University of Hamburg & Cambridge University). The lead paper on the approach is presented by the authors, and will then be discussed by a selection of respondents from leading international scholars in the fields of Political Theory, International Relations Theory, IR Theory and Political Philosophy.
